You Tell Me...

it's been a long time. wanted to just reach out and connect with the folks we made the show for and now have made the movie for. rather than ramble on, why don't you tell me what you'd like to hear about, within reason. i will try to give you insight into this process and the people behind it. hope it will be fun. let's go.

sincerely,
David

Hi, David!!
Thanks for taking the time, effort & energy to write this blog! I’m an “old” fan from the way-back – I remember watching the pilot (in the dark, with a pizza & a beer) like it was yesterday!

My question relates to a comment you made at the LA Film fest – that at the beginning and at it’s core, the X-Files was and is all about really great, scary stories (or something close to that – don’t wanna mis-quote you!).

I think we can all agree that the X-Files is still the Rolls Royce of scary. I was re-watching Shadows late last night (on SciFi so I could see the I Want To Believe commercials – giggle!!!) and that episode – even today – scared the hoo-hoo out of me!

In this era of studios cranking out so many “scary movies” (that rarely are), how conscious were you all of staying true to making an “X-File” and not falling into the easy traps to entice a new audience? Was it difficult getting back into that “spooky” mode…sorry – no pun intended…and did any of you ever have to stop & question whether a line or scene or shot would be “bought” by your audience – old and new fans alike?

Thanks again for doin' what you do!

Hi David,
Thanks for dropping a line... I cannot wait to see th film, I have watched the series since I was eleven and I am now 22! (you probably think I am sad!)
When I was little it was my aim to go out to L.A when I was 18 to find you! I then realised that I was living a pipe dream and have decided against it! Instead, I am coming to the London premier, where I hope to finally meet you.
Here are some questions...
* Do you enjoy making Californication and do you find the sex scenes nerve racking?
*was it enjoyable to reunite with the Xfiles crew?
* If you had written the film, how would you have done it differently?
Best wishes, see you in London, I probably will not get anyhere near the front. Best wishes, Claire, England.

Terribly sorry if I'm repeating a question (I tried to read all the previous comments...). If you could have written an X-Files film, regardless of things like the chronology and the mytharc, what would it have contained/been about? The crazier the better.

Anonymous said...

so are 200 comments more ore less than you want/ expected/ can deal with?
"cause here I go.. agaaaaain..I looo.."
uh, no.

First of all thank you for beeing there at Wondercon and LA FilmFest!
Also for coming back to the XF with Gillian for this movie! I guess it cant be said enough how much this job prevents you from having much of a private life. And apart from the fact that you get payed for the job- I feel bad that somehow we as fans gain and you lose some happy moments(maybe). So: sorry.

So my question, I guess, would be if fandom around TV series/actors/movies scares you.

When I saw videos of you and FS and CC enetring the "stage" at LA FilmFest and heard the crowd ..I was impressed how close you guys were. Of course the FilmFest has to provide a certain level of security..
But what I mean is not really you being physically in danger- but the fact that thousands of people all over the world are obsessive about those two characters Mulder and Scully and spend much of their free time being creative in form of fanfiction, fanvideos etc. .

You and Tea are supporting charity work..

Do you think that people use TV series for escapicism to a degree that is unhealthy for society/their children? That people hide and fantasize about stuff instead of leading their own lives (=TV and PC on stand by) ...

I mean you said yourself that you like to go to the movies.
Do you consider it as normal that people escape from reality here and there in order to cope with things?
Are we – the fans- still somewhat human to you, or is your good opinion on us lost forever? ;)

"So my question, I guess, would be if fandom around TV series/actors/movies scares you."

oh- and that "You Tell Me" reminds me of that episode you co.wrote with CC =)!
<3 it
Thanks for your time,
Ulrike, Berlin (Germany)

Hi David.

Thank you for finding the time to blog.

My questions.

1. Will you be coming to England to promote the film?

2. Do you need a place to stay!!!!!

David,

Thanks for the blog time...we really appreciate it. I have kind of a wacked out question for you that might better suited for Chris Carter. I have heard that certain government agencies would contact Chris and put in their "two cents" as far as plot lines and conspiracy suggestions for XF. Any hint of truth to that as far as you know?

Hi David,

It's been 15 years since you first graced our televisions as Fox Mulder. In that time, you've obviously had a lot of changes in your own life.

Do you find that your own life experiences affect how you approach a character? Do you see Mulder with a different perspective now than you did 15 years ago? And if so, are you more or less sympathetic to his plight than you were back then?

Thank you as always! You're a peach!

Best wishes,
Julie

Hello Mr. Duchovny,

It is very nice of you to reach out to the fans. I know how busy your life must be and as a fan I truly appreciate your efforts.

My questions are simple, if this movie does will and Mr. Carter decides to do another will you be willing to do another??

Also why do you have ONLY big premieres in cities like NY, LA and London?? Lots of fans live in sunny Miami Florida and we would love to see a BIG premiere here!!!

Thanks in advance!!

Your big fan and X-Files fanatic,

Yolanda

Oh well, that's something that I never thought that you would do. Burned my tongue. :-P
I hope that you can tell us about the 'behind the scenes' of The X Files - I Want to Believe. Really, I can bet that you have a lot of interesting stories to tell.

What monetary threshold of box office receipts do you expect the first weekend to quantify the movie as a "bonafide" hit?

What level of domestic box office receipts do you expect by the end of the year?

hi david!

When i first encountered this blog 2 days ago..it just had 3 comments..and look now what we have =)

a big thanks for reaching out to the fans, this simple gesture could mean a lot to MOST of us.

I've been a fan since 1 was 14..im turning 25 this Aug 9 - same as GA's Birthday and I'm so overwhelmed because almost after a full decade since i started watching, you guys are still here.

CHEERS and I hope for more X-files sequels till i get old and weary =)

I'm thinking of filing a weeks leave just to see and review the film.

All the best,

To cut to the chase, my question is: How did you develop a history for what happened during those years that you were apart from Fox Mulder, and how did you, as an actor, bring yourself to that place? How did you balance that with staying true to what occurred during the span of the show?

I keep reading things like "I've been a fan since I was 13", and I apologize if it makes you feel old, but I've been a fan since I was 10 years old.
I was forbidden to watch the show because my parents thought I was too young, but I found my way around it.
Thanks for bringing to life a character I've been in love with since I discarded my belief that boys had cooties.
Take care,
Erinn

Uau, do you really read all this comments? :) I´m a fan of the x-files since 12 and now I'm 26 years old, and the major responsible is you because of the skin and bones you gave to Mulder. I liked specialy of you bringing your personal sense of humor to the caracter whenever possible. So I would like to know if there was any room in this movie for jokes and if there where funny situations in the set that you can share with us. I would like also to share my blog with you (image) but its in portuguese, i don't know if you can read it :(. Well it´s something like "files not very secret" and it's about me remember my childwood (Regressive hipnosis :))and about some very real stuff going here at Portugal and sometimes the world that is so stupid that sometimes we wonder if it's real, so I joke and discuss it like paranormal stuff. To finish (women talk so much) I just want to say to you that I'm happy (the true is i'm on paradise) you and the x-files are back and that i love your work, so in X-files or not count on me on the theathers to see all your movies. Good luck to your carreer and sorry for my bad english. Kisses (beijos)

Dear David,

I'd first like to add my voice to the chorus (or is it a cacophony?) welcoming you back to "The X-files" and internet blogging. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to interact with you in this way and express our love for the show and your work on it, especially for those of us who were not and will not be lucky enough to see you in person at any of the promotional events. I love the dry delivery, athleticism, and conviction you brought to the character of Fox Mulder.

I'd be happy to hear anything you have to say about the new movie, the old show, "Californication," Hollywood life, or even the price of cheese, but, as you did ask for questions:

1) I'm curious about internet teaser videos that were released of you and Ms. Anderson speaking as Mulder and Scully about what you "miss" about the other. Can you tell us where and when those were filmed and what went into their production?

2) Can we anticipate any contributions from you towards DVD extras for "I Want To Believe"? Dare I hope you have (or will) record a commentary track?

3) I'm assuming you can not comment on the apparently top secret state of Mulder's facial hair in the movie, but perhaps you can say something about what input, if any, you or Gillian had on the physical appearance of Mulder and Scully in the film. How did costume and make-up choice inform your performance when you stepped back into the shoes of this at once familiar and changed character?

Again, thank you for this opportunity and I hope to be watching the further adventures of Mulder and Scully for years to come!

Grace,
In Sacramento, CA

Oh, hi DD.

It is like this that called you here in the brazil. I hope you have gotten to arrive here to read my comment. I am a your great fan as all the ones that they commented here, I believe. I would say that am more than anxious for the premiere of the film. I am almost pulling the hair and almost screaming for oh; I already made a lot that when I attended the series (laughters). And on the one that I would like you to speak here. . . I would like you to tell us a little more of the back stages: all the agitation. It is clear it would like you to tell us how it went to be of turn beside Gillian as Scully. Wanting or not we twisted for you two in the real life. All know that it is absurd, but it is as an extension of the whole romance of the series. I met my friends' great part for the internet. And the something in common among us, the one that did be us friends were the passion for the series. And all or almost everyday we joined to comment epsódios or facts of your own life. In other words, you and Gillian, Scully and Mulder, Chris Carter and all the ones that make part of that great television show or movies they are part of our life. An enormous part, I would say that the responsible part for our dreams. The love of Mulder and Sculle became the love that we wanted for us and above all he/she wanted to thank to you for serving as my charmed prince as Mulder and my platonic love like David.(laughters). I know, I am half dramatic. But nevertheless thank you for turning our more interesting days while we see you in the screen.I wait of the whole heart that answers me. I would do me very happy. Happy for a long time.

With the whole affection, Flávia Ximenes. <3

David,

I think it's safe to say that we will all learn a lot about the making of the movie when the DVD comes out. Personally, I'd be more interested in reading about the little things that we would probably never find out about through DVD extras.

Thanks for making the blog!

Any possibility of a premiere in Vancouver or any advanced screenings?

Also, Californication is great.

Hey, David... Let me just say, that I am so happy you did decided to do this for us. Now, I know you can not give away to much about the film, but I'm just woundering what you can tell us?! I don't know if you're up to or would like to mention anything personal. But my question is: What was it like to be filming in so many haunted locations all over BC? And what was the mood on set during the filming of these scenes? Got any ghost stories you'd wish to share?

Dave Baker said...

In the past you have shown a preference to doing films as opposed to television series. With that in mind, what convinced you that Californication would be worth a return to making television?

Hello David,

Great to have you back online!

Questions? Too much pressure. I don't see how there could be any XF questions left for you to answer anyway. Not that we don't love you for trying. As for spoilers, I'm rabidly avoiding them and CC would put a hit on you anyway.

Here's what you should do. Open your NYT right now, close your eyes and randomly point your finger at something. Then, give us a minimum of 5 paragraphs on said topic. See, it's like homework and you know you rock at that! That's what we really want anyway, randomness with insight into your pretty pretty brain. Then, once the pressures off, if you remember some long lost XF gem by all means jot it down. No pressure!

Are you closing your eyes yet? Dude, I'm serious!

Yo Mr Duchovny,

Um I really don't know what to say. I hope you're reading this. I'm a teenager who got addicted to The X-Files around last year and I totally love the show. In fact, I bought the whole Ultimate Collection...XP

I'd like to hear about the all the FX in the movie, whether it was hard doing the stunts, and how you feel about the (still unknown to us) plot of the movie.

Yeah. Just want to say that you rock, and keep those XF movies coming! And keep this blog alive too, alright?

(And no offense or anything, but I always thought it was a shame that you and Gillian didn't get married, ahaha...)

Yours eagerly,

Hi David,

It's great to see you blogging again. I really enjoyed it when you did it for House of D. I absolutely LOVE Californifaction, it's such a great vehicle for you and looks like it's a lot of fun to do.

I have to admit that I'm awaiting the release of the new X-Files movie with trepidation. I parted ways from the series at the end of season 7 and am wondering how the movie is going to paper over the cracks left from those last two seasons. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Hi David. I'm interested in your opinion on blogging.

Hank Moody definitely had what I thought was a hilarious reaction to being told by his agent that he should blog. Obviously I have a blog and you have a blog, so they serve some purpose or another, but in general what do you think of the good, the bad, and the ugly about blogging?
Do you think Mulder could be an undercover blogger who has finally found a way to spread "the truth," or might those words on a screen have no credibility?
Being a longtime fan of the X-Files and a recent fan of Californication, I think this is a really cool opportunity to hear your thoughts. Enjoy the summer!

Hello, David!

Welcome back to the blogosphere. It's nice to see comments by you online again, after the House of D and Trust the Man blogs. When are you going to start your own website? Your fans would love it. :)

I'm very happy that my theory of a 2nd movie never being made did not come true. It'll be wonderful to have Mulder & Scully on the silver screen once again.

Can I tell you how much I love Californication? I am definitely your #1 Moodyphile. Keep up the good work on this fantastic program, and congrats on the Golden Globe win.

Me and some of my fellow X-Philes saw you in the Windy City when you came for the HoD premiere/Q&A but didn't get a chance to actually meet you in person. It would be nice to have an IWTB premiere here as well. Return to Me is my favorite movie by you.

Don't really have anything more to say, except good luck with both the movie and the TV show.

Sorry to ask, but... Is it really you ?!

It´s just I don't believe it! But either way it's so good that we're now able to talk (sort of) with you like this. I mean, you can answer some of our questions and comments and that's something most of us never thought would be possible, since we may never meet you in person...
So, for your blog, I expect you to tell us about the show that made me and other fans so happy for so much time, and now will be back in a few days -- can't wait for it! Maybe it didn't meant the same for you, since it was all work, work, work, but for all of us, it was our sweet getaway from reality.
As for me, do you have plans to come and meet your brazilian fans? ´Cause you have plenty of them here as well, you know...

I wish you the best...

Okie-dokie...Why am I doing this? I don’t know. I’m not even sure that’s you and there are so many people in love with you that I’m going to be drowned out in the mob of lonely housewives and gay men. So, this draws and interesting question...should I curse in your blog, Mr. Duchovny? Would it matter if I knew you weren’t going to see it? Hmmm? Intriguing, I know. I’m, like, a friggin’ rocket scientist or something. I’m NOT a Rocket Scientist, actually. I’m a kid. Well, a woman...Well, a lady...Actually none of those things. I’m a teen, I suppose. 15. Boring age. Anywhhhhoooo, I suppose I should ask you a question, huh? Alrighty then...Um...Hmm...You must understand, hombre, I already asked you the question I wanted to. At the WonderCon convention (First and ONLY convention I am ever going to. Okay? And I went to see you...NOT look at the comic books. Just so everyone knows it.) I asked you for words of advice. I don’t remember what you said because I was so scared I blacked out but someone has it up on youtube so I may watch it... Oh! A question. Right. Sorry.

Um, okay...Ummm...Oh! Hey, I live in California. I use to live in New York. I heard you were moving back there. My question is: Doesn’t California bl*w?

This is a horrible state. Hate it.

Oh, and since you’re not going to be reading this, I suppose I could ask; Can I interview you for a magazine? First edition. Might be a big seller. And Nick Lea lives in Canada so...I don’t count on getting to him anytime soon. I’m sure he’ll do it...I mean...What else is that guy doing? Nothing. E-mail is on my page, amigo.

THANK YOU for EVERYTHING YOU Do, Make and Create!IT means a world! We NEED what YOU DO and we NEED YOU...

QUESTION: How are YOU after filming TXF2? (want to know) And what is YOUR attitude to TXF fanfiction? (just curious)

YOU are a remarkable Person, very handsome Man, caring Father & Husband, gifted Actor... YOU are a great example to follow. And I'm happy that I'm YOUR fan. But for me YOU've always been more like a relative or a close friend (as well as Gillian)because You play a very significant role in my life, and I owe YOU a lot.

When I first saw You I was 12 (it was October 3, 1998). Now I'm 22. Everything is changing. But You are always with me...

This summer is full of events for me: I graduated, got married...But I feel it is TXF2 I'm most excited about. And I know why. When I heard the News I jumped and loughed like I was s child again. And still I can't calm down. TXF has always been like a present for me which I'll be opening forever.
When I was a small girl I didn't need any presents. Just to let me not go to bed and watch TXF. And if they didn't let me I cried, because I wanted to Scully & Mulder...
And now, like a child, I'm looking forward to TXF2...and to Californication as well.

David, I hope YOU are allright. Take care of YOURSELF. Good luck! And Please, tell Gilli not to worry so much about different stuff. I'm worried about HER.

I still remember being in 4th grade and sitting down with my dad to watch this new show that was going to have aliens. It became a weekly event for us, up until the finale my senior year of high school.

Now six years later, I have the greatest birthday present ever. The movie is being released on my Golden Birthday (25 on the 25th) and my entire family is going to see it.

I am so excited to see this film and hope that you had a great time working on it. I can't wait!

Hi David,
No questions here, just comments. Wanted to let you know that even after many years have passed, I feel the X-Files is still the best show to ever grace the screen on my television set. And when I look around me in the theater on July 25th, I'll know I'm far from being the only one who feels that way. So Congratulations on the growth and staying power of Mulder, Scully and the X-Files. What an amazing accomplishment! and thanks for feeding our addiction. Hi David!
I'm overly excited to find out that you have started a blog. It's awesome to read what you've been up to lately! I've been a fan of XF for a very long time! I know in the past, you've done video games for the XF, just wondering, do you think you, Chris Carter and the gang would be interested in doing an Alternate Reality Game to the X-Files? That would be really cool! Will definitely be watching the movie! "Nailed it!!"
God Bless!
Love Gloria

Dear David,
I remember I was very sad after the last episode of the X-Files series. That TV show has become my favorite from the very first episode I've seen far back in 1993. Actually, after the pilot I couldn't help wondering where have I seen you before. Then I remembered Twin Peaks, the masterpiece by David Lynch, where I've noticed good-looking actor playing a transvestite DEA agent Dennis/Denise Bryson. You were perfect there. Wow, it was so long ago...

Anyway, I was probably one of the happiest people on Earth (together with millions of X-Files fans:) when I heard about the release of the new movie. I am glad that the story is not linked to the mythology of the X-Files, because we haven't seen a good, old, classical X-files case for a long, long time. I'm sure that "I want to believe" will be a success.

Now, my question is do you plan on involving into screenplay writing for some future X-Files films? You are, in my humble opinion, an excellent writer, so it would be a pity not to proceed in that direction in the case of the X-Files, too. The episodes you wrote are among my favorites. And also, I would like to know had you any doubts about being Fox Mulder again, since you gave up on the role in the last season of TV series (which wasn't the same without you)?

I apologize if my questions are the same as someone else's, but I couldn't read all posts. Anyway, it doesn't matter if I don't get the answers. I only wanted to write to you and tell you "thank you" for accepting the role in this film, so I could enjoy in a new X-Files story once more.

All the best to you and I wish you a lot of success with this film and everything else you do.

Sincerely,
Snezana from Belgrade, Serbia.

While Indiana Jones is a cool character from another time, Fox Mulder is just as cool & the hat is always optional.

David,
Love, love, loved the movie. It was like comfort food. It was fun being with a crowd that knew the history. We cheered and laughed. My friend had never watched the show but thought the movie was great. Thank you and Gillian for making my summer!

Just saw the movie Saturday night. I have been a huge X-files fan since day one.

The movie, as a whole, wasn't bad, but I must say I was disappointed. It just wasn't up to X-files standards. I kept waiting for the connection to aliens. I know X-files is about more than aliens, but a psychic pedophile priest was just pretty lame.

As always, I loved Mulder and Scully. David, you're as hot as ever! Maybe another movie in the future??

Dear David,

I would just like to say that I and my fellow X-Philes loved the new movie! We are doing everything we can to promote it because we really want it to do well. Basically, we've started a little facebook group that is growing pretty quickly, but the point of the group is to inspire fans to take everyone they can to see it and go many times themselves. We thought up a competition that fans in the group would love, and I just had a question for you about it.

At the risk of sounding presumptuous (I hope I don't!) if we were to send you something like a t shirt or movie case, would you be willing to sign it? The fans in our group would love it, and the person who wins it will basically have to be the first one to show proof of 20 ticket stubs, either by seeing it themselves or taking twenty people. I have a feeling it would be really popular!

If it's not possible or schedules do not allow it, of course I genuinely understand. We just figured we'd give it a try. Just know your fans are out there fighting for this movie! :)Thanks!

Hello David,
I heard about you going into a rehab faciity for, well you know what for, and although I never write fan letters I felt it was important to send my support and respect your way. I have tremendous affection for you and yours and know that in a very harsh world we all could use every bit of encouragement we can get.
I feel as if you are one of my closest friends, and how ironic since I dont know you aside from a character you play and you dont even know, quite literally, that I even exist. I grew up watching the X-Files; I was thirteen when it came out and followed it from the airing of the pilot to the end of the ninth season to this last movie. Mulder and Scully are my childhood heroes and I was so delighted to see Gillian and you on the big screen again.
I followed both you and Gillian's footsteps, as I had been so inspired from both of you, and have become an actor myself-- graduated from NYU : Tisch and am presently working in independent B movies. (So I guess you could say right now Im following Bruce Campbell's footsteps, but whatever.) When I get bigger, maybe one day we will meet or work together. But till then, I thought it was important to know that someone you inspired to do what you do is still inspired, and has nothing but adoration in her heart for both you and gillian.
This time for you will probably be difficult and even embarrasing, but you have support from others, many I am sure, who keep you in their thoughts--and have your back. Nothing could ever change that, because I know that your character Mulder would not have been so special if the man playing him was not.

Take good care of yourself and your family.

Most warmly,

Tekla Rose Vassie

Hi David,

I'm pretty sure you are "not" checking this blog anymore, but just in case...

I loved the movie, it was advertised as a stand alone and it was a great stand alone. I don't understand why so many were surprised that there was no alien mythology.

Hope all is going well with you.

Can't wait to see the new season of Californication...
